Beauty and Style Services

Career Field Overview

Barbers, hair stylists, cosmetologists, manicurists, pedicurists, and skincare specialists promote self-esteem, help clients continue to engage in meaningful activities, and are positioned to identify skin and hair issues that could develop into health threats. People working in these fields who have a gerontology background will understand how such services can promote health and well-being throughout life, have good interpersonal skills (including the ability to communicate appropriately with people with cognitive impairment), and recognize changes (e.g., thinning skin) that might make some physical sensations (e.g., being rubbed to hard) uncomfortable. Also need to capture idea of not promoting “anti-aging” cosmetic-stuff.
