Spirituality and Religion

Career Field Overview

Spirituality and religion are important forces in the lives of many people, and are sources of well-being for participants. Further, religious organizations can serve as intergenerational spaces, providing beneficial social connections. The desire and ability to engage in physical religious practices (e.g., attending church, kneeling in prayer, fasting during Ramadan, etc.) may change. Professionals working in these fields should understand the needs and interests of older adults, challenges around grief and loss, how to engage people of all ages collectively, and the importance of promoting an age-inclusive worldview in the educational curricula and mission work of religious organizations.
