Career Field Overview
Postal service workers process and deliver mail, reaching the homes of everyone in the nation. As postal workers are aging and serve people of all ages, those with gerontology education will be best positioned to advocate for their own well-being as well as that of the people to whom they deliver mail and with whom they engage in-person at post offices. By ensuring people can get their mail/packages (particularly with the increasing reliance on online shopping) and can access services at the post office (physically and socially), postal workers have the potential to facilitate enduring social connection. They can deliver vital information and materials (e.g., COVID screening tests) and might also be the first to notice if something is wrong (e.g., if mail isn’t collected, that could indicate a fall/illness).
